90s Skateboarding | San Francisco
Nonconformity, authenticity, style and creative freedom became increasingly important through the early to mid ’90s. Slap Magazine and Planet Earth both stood out for their artistic direction and individuality. Planet Earth brought a different kind of style, character and creativity into skateboarding.
Around 1991, me and my friend Wayne went on a skate trip taking the train down to Newquay in Cornwall. Whilst there we met a guy working at Ollie's Skateshop, pretty close to our campsite. He was real cool and offered to take us skating and show us around during the stay. We had no idea who he was at the time, but he was super friendly, energised and welcoming, something stood out anyhow. Only realised much time later, while reading one of the UK mags that it was Jimmy Boyes, British skateboarding legend. Still remember that trip.
I bought a red-stained Planet Earth Animal Kingdom board while we were at the shop. This was around the time of Planet Earth’s Now ’N’ Later video which Barker Barrett had a part in alongside Jovantae Turner, Brian Lotti and other favourites.
His skating had its own style. Creative, loose and individual. This print is of a drawing based on Dennis McGrath’s photograph of Barker ollieing out of a bump at Mason & Broadway in San Francisco. Back then, skating spots like that was the dream, kickers were rare where I lived.
Remembering a period in skateboarding that helped shape the underground of today. Hand-drawn and halftoned.
